Progressive Christians Speak: A Different Voice on Faith and Politics by Progressive Christians Uniting, John B. Cobb (Editor), Mobilization for the Human Family (Westminster John Knox) Are all Christians conservative on politics and social issues? If not, where are those voices?

Finally, in Progressive Christians Speak we hear from the “middle” and from the “left” – they have remained passive for far too long. Why? Some voices have kept quiet because of to the importance of the separation of church and state, while others have been drowned out by the vocal conservative church. For whatever reason, mainline Christians have allowed an inaccurate view of where the majority of Christians stand to dominate popular understanding.

In Progressive Christians Speak, members of the grassroots organization Progressive Christians Uniting urge Christian churches to take an active role in addressing contemporary social problems, maintaining that religion is an important factor in their solutions. Issues examined include food security and the ever-expanding world population, the welfare system, civil and human rights, the war on drugs, abortion, immigration, and the destruction of ecosystems.

Other chapters include:

  • Religion and the Public Schools
  • Basic Rights for Our Children
  • Homosexuality and Same-gender Unions
  • Is Social Security Really Broken?
  • The Penal System
  • Do Corporations Serve the Human Family?
  • Responding to Sweatshops
  • The Globalization of Economic Life
  • Should Debt Be Forgiven?

First prepared as position papers by members of Progressive Christians Uniting, an ecumenical Christian organization headquartered in Southern California that promotes activism, chapters conclude with what individuals can do, what churches can do, discussion questions, and resources to learn more. The appendix also presents “A Short Political History of the American Christian Right.” Progressive Christians Speak is a timely book with the potential to make a difference.
